“Lost in thought?”
“Hmm, yes, nothing” Sat shook her head instinctively.
“What is bothering you Sat?” the usual curious Matt…
“I was just thinking of an old friend”
“Where did that come from all of a sudden? Who is this friend? Do I know him or her?” Matt is always full of questions
“I called the doctor to fix an appointment and their new ringtone is a Gulzar song. Mike, a friend of mine from my time in Hyderabad used to hate Hindi songs and the only exceptions were Gulzar songs. The song reminded me of him. We used to go shopping together after lunch to browse Gulzar CDs.”
“I’ve never heard you talk about him Sat.”
“I might have told you about him years ago Matt. He was special, he was one of those people who was a genuine friend. In a time where it was difficult for a man and a woman to be just friends, we were friends, thick friends who would talk a lot, enjoy lunch together and we could accept each other’s imperfections and laugh over it. Just like you, he was super special.”
“Where is he now?”
“The last time I got a mail from him, he was in the US, happily married with two lovely kids. That was seven years ago. He was my rock when I was going through a tough time and I’ve lost him.”
“You mean, in this time of facebook and twitter, you can’t find him?”
“Yes Matt, I can’t find him.I sent him a few emails. They never bounced and I never got any replies. I just hope he is well and happy wherever he is. He is not a person who will ignore someone. Sometimes something really insignificant can bring back memories of people, a wonderful past and what not. I wonder why I had to think of him now.”
Matt could see Sat sitting with her head down, trying hard to hide her tears. She must miss her friend too much, else she wouldn’t be so all over the place and upset this easily. He just touched her hand to tell her he was there with her and it was ok for her to cry if she wanted to.
The rest of the lunch was had in silence.
